Heating Options to Consider This Season

Looking for a new heater to keep your home comfortable this season? You have a lot of options to choose from, if you are. Each heating system has its own set of advantages, and is suited to different home situations. You’re going to want to make sure that you carefully consider the pros and cons of each type before you install one, just to make sure that you get the best one for your needs. Let’s have a look at a couple of the more popular heating types available on the market, and why you might want to consider installing one of them.

Furnace
The furnace may seem like the more vanilla option when it comes to heating systems, but it has a lot going for it. There’s a reason that the furnace remains the most popular heating system type on the market, overall. Furnaces are affordable, effective, and come in many different types. This makes it a lot easier to find a furnace that will fit your situation.

Boiler
A boiler provides a number of advantages that other heating systems don’t, mostly deriving from its unique construction. Rather than distributing heat from forced air, a boiler pumps hot water through a series of pipes installed in the sub-floor of each room. As the water flows through the pipes, the heat from it radiates up through the floor and into the room. This is part of a method called radiant heating.

Radiant heating tends to be more efficient than forced air heating in a number of ways. Water is a better thermal medium than air is. It retains more heat, and does so for longer. So, it takes less energy to keep an entire home heated using radiant heating than it would using forced air. Boilers also don’t have to contend with duct leaks, which are responsible for losses of up to 30% in the average forced air system. If you are interested in saving money on heating bills, and want to keep your home more evenly and comfortably heated in the process, a boiler might be a good option for you.

Heat Pump
A heat pump bears more resemblance to an air conditioner than a heater, in a lot of ways. Instead of combusting some kind of fuel to generate heat, the system evaporates refrigerant to absorb thermal energy from outside the home. The system then condenses the refrigerant gas back into liquid in the indoor unit to vent the collected heat into the home. Heat pumps are able to reverse the direction that refrigerant flows through their systems, which makes it possible for them to act as either heaters or air conditioners as the situation warrants. This is the reason that many homeowners choose to install a heat pump as their sole source of climate control.
