Should I Replace My Heating System This Fall?

We’re already getting deep into heating season, but there is still time left to get your climate control situation in order if you haven’t already. If your current heating system is unable to get you through another winter, now would be a very good time to install another one.

If you’re not sure whether or not you need to replace your system, it’s a good idea to have a look at the list below. These are not the be-all, end-all indicators of whether or not a system is near the end of its life. However, they are a good way to help determine whether or not you should call for further consultation with a professional.

High Monthly Operating Costs
If your heating costs from month to month are rising faster than added demand would account for, it’s a good idea to call a professional. Unexplained spikes in monthly heating costs can happen as the system nears the end of its effective lifespan. The older a heater gets, the more worn out its various parts become. This causes a steady decline in the efficiency of the system, forcing it to operate for longer periods of time in order to compensate.

High Repair Needs
Occasional repairs are to be expected with heating systems, regardless of what kind you’re using. However, you shouldn’t need to repair the system more than a couple of times every few years. If you need to repair your heater quite often, on the level of multiple times a year, it’s time to consult with a professional about possibly replacing it. That frequency of repair issues often results from high levels of wear on the various parts of the heater. Eventually, those worn parts of the system will start to fail in groups. Once this starts happening, there is very little that can be done about it. All you can really do is install an entirely new system. You can keep repairing the system if you like, but all you’ll really be doing is replacing the system one part at a time. It’s far more cost-effective in the long run to just install a new system.

Old Age
How long a heater lasts will depend on the type of heater you’re using, as well as the individual circumstances of the home in which it is installed. No matter what, though, you shouldn’t expect to get more than 15 years of good use out of it. That might be a bit longer if you’re using a boiler, which has a tendency to last up to 20-25 years. Still, for the most part, you’ll probably need to replace the system after 15. A heater that’s older than 15 years will often have a whole range of issues, similar to those we’ve already discussed above. As the system gets older and older, it will start to become less and less cost-effective to keep operating. If your heater is older than 15, consult with a professional technician about whether or not it’s a good idea to replace it now.
